December Daily 2016: Day 2 & 3

December 03, 2016  /  brandi kincaid

As I work dusk to dawn to wrap up my custom orders for the year, I'm keeping the stories from each day small and doable, but I am loving them all the same.

Oh, Dorothy, you'll always be my favorite.

Today's pages were done earlier in the day because it became very clear, very early, that the story for the day was going to be a tough love letter to myself after hitting a few road blocks in the day.

I am happy to say that the day, and the work done post this little kick in the pants, went much, much smoother. Maybe some days you just need to stop, drop, and craft in order to even out a bit?

December Daily 2016: Day 1

December 01, 2016  /  brandi kincaid

I love this project more and more each year, and I am finding myself so relieved to be settling into the rhythm of these daily reflections again.

IMG_8847.JPG

This year, I made a few pages prior to day one so that I could capture a few of our decorations and their stories, as well as my annual wish list. I was also reminded how dangerous it is for me to print on transparencies, because it starts with one, and then I find myself swimming in them.

IMG_8849.JPG

It was fun to give more space to some of my favorite decorations, and I see a lot more of this in my future.

Paper chains forever and ever.

IMG_8853.JPG

Okay, maybe paper chains AND bottlebrush trees forever.

IMG_8855.JPG

This year I am changing things up a bit and writing a love letter each day.  Some of these will be long, some short, some to myself, some to others, some to objects, and let's be honest, there will be at least one to food.

IMG_8869.JPG

Sometimes a letter to myself is the best way to get through to my somewhat stubborn heart.

And of course, my December 1st story....books.

*as always, some typos go unnoticed until after I photograph the pages (OF COURSE THEY DO), but while some will be corrected and some won't, I don't take the time to reshoot and repost, so rest assured, I saw the errors, little boogers that they are, I am just not updating the photos I share.

The Story Behind the Stamp: Light Parade

November 07, 2016  /  brandi kincaid

I've been dying to share more about the first stamp collection I designed for Ellen Hutson, but I also wanted to document some of the stories behind the ideas and designs, so I finally got my act together and decided to make a series of layouts for my album.

These simple stories tell a little more about what inspired and informed these drawings, the memories, the love, all of the life that goes into these simple illustrations that end up on cards, layouts, in pocket page spreads, adorning tags, and for me, bookmarks. There's nothing I make that doesn't have a story behind it, that's the truth of who I am as an artist and crafter, and I getting those down on paper is tops on my list. I want to remember all of it.

With the season nearing, I started with the Light Parade set, a story near and dear to me, and a reminder that it doesn't take much to have an incredible, memorable holiday:

For all its glitter, the best memories I have of the Christmas holidays are the simplest. I remember the excitement of unpacking the ornaments one by one, the small battles over who’d get to hang each, who made what, the tug of memories and the stories we’d associated with each one changing a little with every telling.

Of all that, one of my clearest, best memories is of my mom calling to us to get our pajamas on and our butts in the car for a drive around neighborhoods to look at the lights.  Some years, there’d be snacks, and though I remember cups of hot chocolate, I can’t say for sure now if that’s accurate, or just a memory I’ve conjured out of the stories of my friends doing the same thing with their children now.

There’s magic in the oohing and ahhing, magic in the twinkle of the bulbs against the dark night, the Christmas carols belted out by tiny voices, the cold wind and red noses stuck outside the windows to get a closer look.  There’s magic in being together and taking it all in, and it’s this very magic that called to me as I was dreaming up designs for stamp sets.

It’s funny that in a set so clearly made of lights and houses, children, treats, a car, and good wishes, what I see most, or more accurately who I see most, is my mother.  Every time I pick up the Light Parade set to make something new, I am reminded of a woman whose spirit and enthusiasm for life extended beyond financial constraints, and always found a way to offer her two very different daughters a way to enjoy the season that costs nearly nothing. I think this year I will bring this tradition back, and though it may just be Andrew and me, there will definitely be snacks and hot chocolate, and I might even give it all I’ve got with a favorite carol.

It’s been a very lucky year, not easy, but incredible, because while on paper I get to design stamps, what I really get to do is make things that tell stories, and then I get to watch as people use them to do the same. That’s worth it’s own kind of light parade.

Calm & Bright

October 15, 2016  /  brandi kincaid

So much of the holidays feels heavy, busy, overhyped, and hectic, but then there's all the good stuff that reminds us how much we love this time of year, and suddenly slowing down to celebrate the smallest memories we're making feels like the biggest win. The newest kit from Feed Your Craft, Calm & Bright, was designed with these slow, small, memorable moments in mind, and I am so excited to share it with you today!

It was fun to incorporate some of my own holiday favorites like bottlebrush trees, vintage ornaments, overflowing boxes that never seem to hold what was unpacked from them just a month before, and of course, my most favorite lyric from a Christmas song, "let your heart be light."

I had so much fun using the dark blue paper with white, lit houses to start making foundation pages for my album this season.  Adding a little bit of stamping with metallic ink makes me ready for dark winter nights and maybe even a little snow.

Not only will you get the full kit with the 4x6 stamp, but you'll also get the digital files as well as an additional digital printable:

You can get your own kit in the Feed Your Craft shop here, and then don't forget to hop over to Elise's blog to see even more inspiration!

Thank you to all of you for your incredible support this past year of kits - I cannot ever tell you how much it means to me.

December Daily Unboxing Video

October 04, 2016  /  brandi kincaid

I am so excited to share my love of this year's December Daily® main kit, as well as the mini kit from Pam Garrison, that I am willing to set aside the fact that unboxing videos are so clearly not my gift in life (I promise I tried not to talk so much). Here's the thing though, when you're really excited about something, it just shows, right?

You can watch my video here:

Note:  the berry boxes I used are primarily from the summer's bounty, but this year I picked up a small pack on clearance at the craft store.  This stack has some of both, with the top one being from the craft store.  I can't tell the difference between any in the stack, so my suggestion is to save and reuse the ones your berries come in!

And then head over to Ali's site to grab a kit (or two, or three, or well, you know...of your own).

If you're new to Pam Garrison's gorgeous work (like I was many moons ago), go check her out here or here.

This Anniversary

August 23, 2016  /  brandi kincaid

“All the variety, all the charm, all the beauty of life is made up of light and shadow.”
— Leo Tolstoy

I've celebrated so many over the years, the births, friendships, marriages, years of work, and deaths, but this anniversary crept up on me, spooked me a bit as I remembered yesterday afternoon that it's been a month since I left my day job to strike out on my own.

One month in, here's what I know to be true: plans are overrated.  Here's what else I know: if you love your life enough to change it, it will show up for you in ways that you cannot imagine before you take the leap. Your life will bend and stretch, tug and push, crumple, and rise up, and when you need it to, whisper quietly through the act of people laughing and saying thank you and holding the door, flowers blooming, cool breezes on hot days, and that song you forgot you loved coming through the speakers, that everything will be okay.  Here's what I know to be true: everything will be okay.

A tried and true worrier with a heart like swiss cheese that lets everything in and through, I was terrified I'd never survive the uncertainty, never make it through the work and the waiting.  As someone who's always thinking/predicting/planning what may come that shouldn't, I wasn't sure I'd be able to live through the days of just, well, living right there and then.  The only thing I knew one month ago was that I needed to move, so move I did.

In the first week working from home, a barista told me that she thought working from home must be so glamorous (it isn't), a few days after that the man at the bookshop told me that working from home must be overwhelming (it isn't), then just today I found myself telling a friend that working from home is the most empowering thing I've ever done (it really is).  The nitty gritty is that I don't work any less than before, I might even work more some days, and I have no idea what day of the week it is most of the time, and my "weekend" is usually Monday and Tuesday, but lately that's been more like just Tuesday.  I stay up late and get up early, and I draw so much that my hand cramps. I have days when I feel sure I am amazingly talented, and others that leave me wondering who told me I could do all of this anyhow.  I laugh so much more than I used to, but I still cry a lot, too - I'm full of emotion that way.  In any given moment you could ask me if I feel like everything's working out as I'd hoped, and I could give you one of two answers: yes or no.  In any given moment, you could ask me if I am happy, and I would give you the same answer: YES.  I couldn't have done that one month ago, so I guess what I'm saying is Happy Anniversary to the light and shadow, and the charm of being alive in a life I love.

One month in, I still hope for all the things I did at the beginning, and this change, which really shifted so much more than simply where my paycheck comes from, asks a lot of me each day. This change asks me to believe in myself, to be brave, to be fearless and fearful all at the same confusing, glorious time, to take myself and my talents more seriously, and in the same breath to stop taking it all so darn seriously.  This change asks me to laugh at myself a little more, and to let the changes in schedule, the stretched plans, the unfollows, and the doubts come and go as they will, but not to let them stop me.

The reality is that this is sometimes what I imagine I look like when I am working on a really good day:

when the truth is a little more like this:

I am grateful for both, and maybe even more that neither of them is exactly right.

I have this feeling that someone might read this who is exactly where I was one year ago, six months ago, one month ago, nodding their head, but certain that this can never be them, that they could never take such a leap with so much at stake, and I get it, my list was and is long, too, but the risk on the other side was high, too. One month and one day in, I can still say that I begin each day with the biggest of dreams, and the simplest of plans; I still plan to be happy.

Food for Thought

August 01, 2016  /  brandi kincaid

I know I say this about every kit, but I really love this one.  When Elise suggested a food theme, I was in before she finished her sentence.  As the daughter of a restaurant man, I grew up around cooking and eating as more than just an every day necessity, and I loved infusing some of that love for food and those it gathers into this kit.

This month I used the kit straight out of the box to make a few cards for my Project Life, and playing with all the cards and patterned paper, I knew I'd want my release day project to be a couple of spreads from these last weeks, filled with good foods, as usual.  Besides the cork numbers and a sheet of white card stock, I stuck to the kit only, showing what you can do with the stamp, papers, cards, flair, and the digital printable elements.

The best part of that digital printable sheet that comes with every order is that you can use it over and over again, so I never feel guilty about cutting elements out of a card, or pulled to hoard some of the illustrated circles.

It should come as no surprise when I tell you that yellow, orange, and salmon are calling my name color wise these days, and I had so much pulling them together to document a few distinctly summer treats.

Elise is sharing an absolutely stunning layout on her blog, so be sure to head over and visit her, too!

You can pick up the physical and digital kit in the Feed Your Craft shop, and if you haven't already, take a look at the previous kits and save on shipping!
